Mass gainers are high-calorie protein powders that combine protein with a larger amount of carbohydrate — and sometimes some fat — in a single serving, so mixing one scoop adds noticeably more calories than a standard whey protein shake. The main thing to compare is the calorie and protein-to-carbohydrate ratio per serving on the label: "lean" gainers lean toward more protein and fewer carbs per scoop, while "mass" or "giant" formulas are built for a much higher total calorie count. Larger pack sizes lower the price per serving but take up more storage space, so they're worth buying only once you know you'll finish the tub before the best-before date.
