Protein powder is one of the most popular supplements among people who exercise and Estonians with an active lifestyle. But there are dozens of different variants on store shelves — whey protein, casein, meat protein, vegetable protein, mass gainer — and prices range from 18 euros to 40 euros. How to choose the right one for you? In this guide, we look at the types of protein powder, options that suit your goals, give specific product recommendations, and talk about what sets OstroVit apart from other brands.

What is protein powder and why is it needed?
Protein powder is a concentrated source of protein that is used when the amount of protein you get from your daily diet does not meet your goals. The average person needs about 0.8 g of protein per kg of body weight per day. With active training, the need increases to 1.6–2.2 g per kg — that is, an 80 kg man who trains needs 130–180 g of protein per day. Getting this amount from food alone (chicken, fish, eggs, cottage cheese) requires discipline and planning. One scoop of protein powder (25–30 g) provides 20–25 g of pure protein and is ready in seconds.
Protein powder is NOT "chemistry" or "doping" — it's simply dried milk, meat, or plant protein. A quality product contains minimal other ingredients besides protein (a little carbohydrates, fat, natural flavors).
Who is protein powder suitable for?
- For people who exercise — supports muscle recovery and growth
- For those losing weight — protein keeps you full and preserves muscle mass during a diet
- For people with a busy lifestyle — a quick breakfast or snack
- For those recovering — after illness, injury or surgery
- For the elderly — prevents age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
- For vegetarians and vegans — a plant-based protein supplement
Protein powder is NOT just for bodybuilders — it's also a good choice for the average person if it's difficult to get protein from food.
Types of protein powder
Whey protein
Whey protein is the most popular and researched type of protein powder. It is absorbed quickly (30–60 minutes), has a high biological value (contains all essential amino acids), and is best for building muscle mass. Whey protein is derived from milk — it is a byproduct of cheese production.
There are three main subtypes of whey protein:
- Concentrate (WPC 80): contains 70–80% protein, with some lactose and fat remaining. The most affordable option.
- Isolate (WPI): 90%+ protein, almost 0 lactose and fat. Suitable for lactose intolerant people. More expensive.
- Hydrolysate: partially pre-aged, absorbed fastest. Most expensive, usually only needed by top athletes.
Who is it suitable for: those who want to gain muscle mass, people who exercise, those who need quick absorption after exercise.
Beef protein
Beef protein is made from beef (usually hydrolyzed beef). It is a lactose-free alternative to whey protein, naturally contains creatine and collagen. It is absorbed moderately quickly and has a strong amino acid profile.
Who is it suitable for: people with milk protein intolerance, people who eat a lot of meat, those who want an "animal" alternative to whey.
Plant protein (pea, soy, hemp, rice)
Plant protein is suitable for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant. The most popular are pea protein, soy protein, rice protein and hemp protein. Newer products combine several sources to provide a complete amino acid profile (e.g. pea protein + rice protein). Absorption is slower than whey, but muscle mass growth is almost equal if the amount is sufficient.
Suitable for: vegans, vegetarians, lactose intolerant, people with milk allergies.
Note: Plant-based proteins (ICONFIT Pea Protein, Soy Isolate, Hemp Protein) are periodically available in our online store. Currently out of stock — we recommend following the category page or writing us a request.
Mass gainer
Mass gainer is a protein powder + carbohydrate mixture used by those who want to gain muscle mass and weight ("hard gainers"). A typical scoop can contain 30–50 g of protein and 60–120 g of carbohydrates, for a total of 400–600 kcal. It is intended for those who have difficulty getting the necessary amount of calories from food alone.
Who is it suitable for: skinny people who want to gain weight and muscle mass; athletes during a heavy training period.
Caution: Mass gainer is NOT suitable for weight loss or people who exercise little — excess carbohydrates lead to an increase in fat mass.
Multi-blend (multiple source blend)
Multi-blend products combine several types of protein: whey (fast), casein (slow), egg (medium). The goal is to provide a steady supply of protein over several hours. They are good for the evening before bed ("bed-time" protein) or for longer food breaks.
How to choose the right protein powder?
The decision depends on four main factors:
1. Your goal
- Muscle mass growth: whey protein concentrate or isolate, 1–2 scoops per day.
- Weight loss: Whey protein isolate (low carb/fat), can replace 1 unsuitable snack per day.
- Weightlifting: mass gainer + regular whey protein after workout.
- Recovery from training: whey protein + carbohydrates (RECO-type products).
2. Diet and allergies
- Lactose intolerance → whey protein isolate or meat protein
- Milk allergy → meat protein or vegetable protein
- Vegan → plant-based protein (pea, soy, hemp)
- Doesn't eat meat → whey, plant-based
3. Budget
Protein powder prices in Estonia range from around €18 to €40 for 700–1000 grams. Cheaper doesn't always mean lower quality — it depends on purity and composition. Isolates are more expensive because they are more processed. Always compare the price per gram of protein , not the price per package.
4. Quality marks
Check the product label:
- Grams of protein per serving (good: 20–25 g per 30 g scoop)
- Amount of sugar (good: less than 3 g per serving)
- Additives (ideal: few, only flavorings and solvents)
- Origin and manufacturer (EU manufacturers are strictly regulated)
- Batch number and best before date
